PeopleBunch vs On the Button - Which is the better fit for an early years setting or group?

A note before you read: We created On the Button, so this is not an independent review. PeopleBunch’s public safeguarding information is currently more limited than some of the larger safeguarding platforms, so this comparison only uses features and claims that could be verified publicly.

PeopleBunch has developed a dedicated Safeguarding Suite for nurseries and schools, but it also sits inside a much broader people-management, HR and compliance platform.

That makes the comparison interesting because there is genuine overlap, but the two systems appear to start from different places.

The answer in a few lines

PeopleBunch appears to start from a broad management and compliance position. Its wider platform covers areas such as staff records, HR, policies, supervision, performance, compliance and inspection readiness, with a Safeguarding Suite sitting inside that wider offer.

On the Button starts from day-to-day early years practice.

It was built from practice up.

It starts with somebody noticing something about a child, family, colleague or practice, recording it, and making sure the right person sees it. From there, actions, decisions, outcomes and chronology build the evidence leaders need.

PeopleBunch may suit providers wanting a broader people, compliance and safeguarding platform. On the Button may suit providers wanting safeguarding, wellbeing, complaints and whistleblowing to remain the central purpose of the system.

What PeopleBunch is built to do

PeopleBunch describes its Safeguarding Suite as a way for nurseries and schools to manage safeguarding concerns, actions, oversight and accountability in one secure place.

Its recent public safeguarding material describes:

• recording safeguarding concerns

• secure safeguarding records

• monitoring actions and follow-ups

• centralised safeguarding information

• clear accountability

• incident tracking

• inspection-ready reporting

• better visibility for nursery leaders

• tracking concerns through to completion

• maintaining a clear audit trail

That is much closer to On the Button’s territory than a general HR platform would be.

However, safeguarding is only one part of PeopleBunch’s wider proposition. Public material also describes nursery and school management, HR, staff records, compliance, policies, onboarding, supervisions, goals, payroll-related functions and inspection readiness.

What On the Button is built to do

On the Button starts with the person closest to the child.

A concern may begin with a mark, a change in behaviour, something a parent says, an unexplained absence, a wellbeing observation, a complaint or a concern about a colleague.

The aim is to make sure the information is recorded promptly, reaches the right person and stays connected to what happens next.

On the Button brings together:

• safeguarding

• child, family and staff wellbeing

• complaint management

• anonymous whistleblowing

• attendance information

• safer recruitment information

• training records

• safeguarding risk evaluation

• actions and outcomes

• chronologies

• immediate SMS and email alerts for safeguarding and complaints

• group visibility where applicable

It does not try to become a complete HR or nursery-management platform.

Its job is to support the safeguarding practice around the technology, from first concern through to action, outcome and evidence.

Built from practice up, rather than management down

This may be the clearest distinction between the two systems.

PeopleBunch’s wider offer appears to start with leadership, workforce management, compliance and oversight, with safeguarding integrated into that broader platform.

On the Button starts with what happens in practice.

What was noticed?

Who recorded it?

Who needs to know?

How quickly are they alerted?

What was decided?

What action was taken?

What was the outcome?

Can the whole chronology still be understood later?

Both approaches can ultimately support inspection evidence. The difference is where they begin and what sits at the centre of the product.

At a Glance

PeopleBunch On the Button
Main purpose Broader people-management, HR, compliance and safeguarding platform. Specialist safeguarding, wellbeing, complaints and connected early years records.
Starting point Leadership, workforce, compliance and organisational records. Day-to-day early years practice and what somebody notices.
Safeguarding Dedicated Safeguarding Suite for concerns, records, actions, follow-ups and audit-ready reporting. Whole-team concern logging, immediate alerts, actions, outcomes and chronology.
Wellbeing Public safeguarding material reviewed does not clearly describe separate child, family and staff wellbeing workflows. Separate child, family and staff wellbeing records alongside safeguarding.
Complaints Public material reviewed does not clearly describe a dedicated complaint-management journey. Dedicated complaint management from first concern through action and outcome.
Whistleblowing Public material reviewed does not clearly describe a separate anonymous staff whistleblowing route. Separate anonymous whistleblowing route for concerns about staff, policy or practice.
Alerts Public safeguarding material confirms concerns, actions and follow-ups, but the alert route and channels are not clearly described publicly. Immediate SMS and email alerts for safeguarding and complaints; wellbeing reviewed separately.
Staff / HR A major strength of the wider PeopleBunch platform, including people management and compliance. Safer recruitment and training records sit alongside safeguarding, but On the Button is not an HR system.
Inspection readiness A visible part of PeopleBunch’s wider proposition, including compliance and audit-ready reporting. Helps settings evidence safeguarding practice clearly, but is not a whole-inspection management platform.
Groups PeopleBunch markets to multi-site nursery groups and emphasises leadership visibility. Group visibility, permissions, alerts and actions across settings. Built to standardise practice and compliance.
Pricing Current public safeguarding pricing was not clear enough to verify responsibly. Older PeopleBunch material referred to per-person pricing. £1 per registered place set-up, then £8 per place annually or 73p monthly. No VAT.

Where PeopleBunch looks particularly strong

The biggest strength appears to be breadth around people management and compliance.

For a nursery group trying to bring staff records, policies, onboarding, supervision, performance, compliance and safeguarding into one platform, that wider structure could be attractive.

Its current safeguarding messaging is also strong on accountability. PeopleBunch says concerns should be logged, assigned, tracked through to completion and fully auditable.

That is a sensible safeguarding principle and one I would want any system to demonstrate in practice.

Where On the Button is different

On the Button is deliberately narrower.

Its focus is what happens when something potentially important is noticed.

The whole team can be given a way to record information without being given access to confidential records they do not need to see.

Safeguarding and complaint entries can trigger immediate SMS and email alerts.

Wellbeing can be recorded separately, so lower-level observations do not automatically become urgent safeguarding cases.

Complaints and anonymous whistleblowing sit close to safeguarding rather than being treated as unrelated administration.

Actions and outcomes remain connected to the original information.

That is the depth On the Button is designed to provide.

Safeguarding suite versus safeguarding system

This is the question that should be explored carefully.

PeopleBunch has moved beyond simple HR and compliance into dedicated safeguarding functionality.

But safeguarding is still one suite within a broader management platform.

On the Button is the safeguarding system itself.

That does not automatically make one better than the other. It does mean a buyer should look beyond whether both products have a safeguarding tab and ask how deeply safeguarding shapes the workflow, permissions, alerts, chronology and day-to-day use.

What about wellbeing?

This is one area where you should ask PeopleBunch for a practical demonstration.

Its public safeguarding material talks clearly about concerns, incidents, actions, follow-ups and audit-ready records, but I could not verify a distinct child, family and staff wellbeing workflow from the public information reviewed.

On the Button keeps wellbeing separate from urgent safeguarding while still allowing patterns to build into a wider picture.

That distinction matters in early years because not every small observation is a safeguarding incident, but it may still become important later.

What about complaints and whistleblowing?

Ask the same question here. PeopleBunch’s public safeguarding material does not currently make a dedicated parent complaint journey or genuinely anonymous staff whistleblowing route clear enough for me to compare responsibly.

That does not mean those functions are absent. It means you should ask to see them.

On the Button includes both as named parts of the system because complaints and concerns about practice can sometimes become safeguarding information.

What about groups?

PeopleBunch clearly markets to multi-site nursery groups and its wider platform is built around leadership visibility, compliance and people management across organisations.

On the Button Group Picture: Features & Benefits across multi-sites

• Central visibility across all sites

• Highlighted actions outstanding

• Consistent expectations between settings

• All on a need-to-know basis

• Alerts highlight actions outstanding

• Acknowledgements for accountability

• Setting Welfare Report

• Patterns and Trends

• New site onboarding overviews

What does PeopleBunch cost?

We could not find a current public Safeguarding Suite price that we could publish as a definitive 2026 comparison.

Older PeopleBunch material referred to pricing from £2.50 per person, while third-party software listings show per-person pricing. Those figures may not reflect the current Safeguarding Suite or current packages, so cannot use them as a buying comparison without a written quotation.

That means the fair approach is to ask PeopleBunch for the full current price, including what is included in the safeguarding package, any onboarding or implementation charges, group pricing, support and VAT.

When PeopleBunch may be the better choice

• you want safeguarding inside a wider people-management and compliance platform

• you want staff records, policies, HR, supervisions and compliance closely connected

• inspection readiness across several management areas is a major priority

• you want broader organisational oversight rather than a specialist safeguarding-only system

• you prefer to reduce the number of separate management platforms used by your organisation

When On the Button may be the better choice

• you want a system built from early years practice up

• safeguarding depth is more important than HR or whole-setting management breadth

• you want separate child, family and staff wellbeing records

• you want complaints and anonymous whistleblowing alongside safeguarding

• immediate SMS and email alerts are important

• you want the whole team to record concerns without accessing confidential histories

• you want actions, decisions and outcomes connected clearly to the original concern

• you already have satisfactory HR and nursery-management arrangements and do not want to replace them

• you want transparent per-place pricing

Questions to ask both providers

1. Show me exactly what happens when a practitioner notices something and records it.

2. Who is alerted, how are they alerted and how quickly?

3. Can bank staff, students and volunteers record concerns without seeing confidential records?

4. Can I record wellbeing separately from an urgent safeguarding concern?

5. Show me how a parent complaint is recorded, acknowledged, investigated and closed.

6. Can a member of staff make a genuinely anonymous whistleblowing report?

7. How are actions assigned and how do I know whether they have been completed?

8. Show me the chronology from first concern to final outcome.

9. Show me the report that would be shared with Social Care, the LADO or Ofsted.

10. If I run several settings, what can group leaders actually see and do?

11. What is included in the price and what costs extra?

12. What happens to our information if we decide to leave?

Final Thoughts

PeopleBunch's recent Safeguarding Suite marketing addresses many of the same weaknesses On the Button was built to solve: fragmented records, missed follow-ups, weak accountability and limited leadership visibility.

The difference is that PeopleBunch appears to approach safeguarding as part of a much wider people-management and compliance platform.

On the Button starts from the safeguarding and wellbeing journey itself.

So, don't try to choose between them by counting modules.

Ask both providers to demonstrate the same real-life concern from the moment a practitioner notices something to the final action and outcome.

Start with what happens in the room. Then follow it all the way through.

That will show whether the system fits the way your setting or group actually works.
